A Dominar of Action
I have a very optimistic view of individuals. As individuals, people are inherently good. I have a somewhat more pessimistic view of people in groups.

Steve Jobs

Best Steve Jobs interview I have ever read. From the NeXT days.

I think Steve Jobs is a dick, but I share his views on this point.

I disagree whole-heartedly. It is an inborn behavior for people to be selfish, and to assert their dominance over those weaker than themselves. These traits were achieved as a result of natural selection, as they increase one’s likelihood of survival and reproduction. What is defined as “good”. Is it “good” to weaken the human gene pool by protecting people who are unwilling or unable to protect themselves? Is it “good” to interfere with these people’s chances at reproduction? “Good” is not something that actually exists in our universe; it is a subjective concept, which exists solely in our minds. Humans cannot be good or bad. They can take measures to prolong their survival and ensure their successful reproduction, or they can choose not to. On a long enough time scale all species will go extinct. When all records of our time are gone the universe will keep on spinning, always hiding its secrets. Will it matter then how violent or dishonest we were to each other?

Unfortunately these ideas are tainted by one great flaw. They presume the lack of a higher power. If a higher power exists, are there such things as good and bad?
